Bait and Witch

"Basically, my apartment's only life came from the bookshelves lining the walls."

SOME SPOILER-FREE THOUGHTS: I've been really excited to pick this book up since I first bought it, but was waiting for my May purple book birthday challenge. So of course it was the first book I dove into this month and it did not disappoint! From the get-go I was interested to learn more about Josie, about Wilfred, and about the circumstances that brought the two together. Kept me on my toes the entire time! I guessed the murderer, but I almost always do, so I won't dock any stars for that.

"Why did I even care? I'd be leaving Wilfred soon. The library would be demolished—probably sooner than later now. I had a homicidal financial fraudster on my tail. And, if tonight's events were any indication, I'd struggle with being a witch the rest of my life."

Josie is one of the most dynamic characters I've read in a while. I haven't been so invested in someone in the longest time and it was so refreshing to get back to the feeling of not wanting to put a book down!

Right off the bat we know she has a secret past and thankfully it doesn't take too long for the author to introduce it to us. Really letting the reader sit in Josie's POV helped to craft the universe from her emotional, physical, aural perspectives which were so important as she was discovering these new book senses that were coming over her.

I truly felt every description Sanders wrote as if I was experiencing it myself. From the sensation overload after Josie unlocked her powers to the whispers from the books and her innate ability to get the truth out of people, I felt like I was living in our FMC's shoes and now I fully plan to become a witch librarian. Let me know if you have any recs on how to get started on that. lol

The mystery itself was great because there were so many layers to it. Who'd have guessed that an accidental murder in an Oregon small town would tie into dirty politics in Washington DC? I can't remember exactly how far into the book we were when Josie got the Sheriff's alibi that he was stationed, looking out for speeders and I immediately knew he wasn't and it had to be him. I even turned back and saw on page 2 Lyndon mentioned the speed trap, but that they were clear. So clever!

Sam was a great add into the plot, not truly ever knowing where he stood considering his tells were all sorts of discombobulated, but as soon as Josie started being able to read him, I knew they shared a connection that went beyond FBI agent and girl in hiding. Excited for more with them in later books!

Overall, this is a great book for readers who love witchy vibes, murder mysteries, and an excellent cast of small town characters. I can't wait to see where Josie's exploration into her magic leads us next and I'm so happy she's staying in Wilfred!

Check out Bait and Witch by Angela M. Sanders, available now in paperback and on KU! (I recommend paperback! There was something so satisfying about flipping the pages as the suspense built!)
