Bridesmaid for Hire

"First things first, everyone in the world is different. Our goals, our values, they're all different and there is no right or wrong to them."

SOME SPOILER-FREE THOUGHTS: Be still my beating heart, this book was everything I needed it to be and more! Meghan Quinn has once again absolutely nailed the steamy rom com (I was both laughing and sweating at many different points) and this has instantly become a new favorite for me! Highly recommend for my fellow enemies to lovers, forced proximity, fake dating girlies because it has all the above and I'm losing my mind at how much I am now obsessed with this book!

"And to my surprise, he leans down and presses a kiss to my shoulder. It's soft and sweet, nothing overtly sexual, but it feeds into my muddled romantic mind, the one that has been washed with romcoms and books that promise me the happily ever after I've always dreamed of."

Not gonna lie I was so excited to start this book that I literally read the first chapter while on the verge of passing out from exhaustion. For some reason my sleeping stupor made me think the entire first chapter was from Maggie's POV, so when I started reading the second chapter I was very confused to say the least. I quickly fixed that and was absolutely living for the fast-paced entrance into the main plot.

I feel like as of late a lot of the books I'm reading and reviews I'm seeing from friends talk about how it took a minute for the story to begin, but not this one. Midway through chapter two Maggie and Brody already collide and give the reader the enemies-to-lovers initial tension we all crave. Not long after that we are swept up in the fake dating scheme that immediately gives us the forced proximity (one bed!) plot line. And I was here for ALL of it!

Of course I loved all the tropes and tensions, but let's talk about the comedy because this book is one of the most authentically funny titles I've read in a long time. I was actually laughing out loud through nearly the entire thing. Quinn's writing is so descriptive that I could easily see Maggie and Brody's story playing out as a movie in my mind. It was so easy to visualize and feel all the embarrassments that poor Brody went through.

While some might say the antics were a little over the top and not realistic, I am not one of those people. As someone who has personally experienced ridiculous events, one right after the other, Brody's many mishaps felt so on brand for his adorkable kind of charm. He might be smooth as hell in the bedroom, but definitely not when trying to impress his boss. The snake bite had me in hysterics alongside the entire Hopper games and spearfishing incident. His imperfections in these circumstances only made me love him more.

And it was that deep love I'd developed for him that made me so unbelievably angry at him for drunkenly pitching Maggie's pocket wedding idea to Hopper. I knew something was going to go wrong, but I was livid when he stole Maggie's idea. Albeit, accidentally while under the influence, but still. I don't think I've ever been so mad at a book boyfriend before. But that is just a testament to how Quinn's dynamic storytelling abilities are able to connect you so deeply to a character that you literally want to throw the book across the room while yelling at them to get it together!

And don't worry, I felt equally as horrified by the villain Reginald Hopper was painted out to be. So well written! I hated him so deeply!

Even though there was a third act breakup that had me screaming for them to just talk to each other, their reunion worked out perfectly with an epilogue leading into a scene from another Quinn title I recently read and loved, The Reason I Married Him.

Overall, this might be my new favorite Quinn novel. Or at least it's tied with The Highland Fling (hello! Scotland!). I will 100% be recommending this to all the girlies who daydream in romcom and know that the sexiest men are the ones who make you laugh.

All My Love,

Jane-Anne
