Fruitcake and Familiars

"I was pretty sure anxiety would be my frenemy for life..."

SOME SPOILER-FREE THOUGHTS: I'm so happy I stuck with this series because each book gets better and better! The storyline, adventure, character development, everything was so good! Definitely my favorite of the three books! We got a little more romance in this book than the last two (which you know I'm a fan of!) but that didn't deter from the heart of the story which was Hazel's quest to save her Grandmother's magic. A quick read with lots of adventure and intrigue I definitely recommend!

"Sparks of love magic flew from my fingers unbidden. Only I could see green rose petals forming in the air above our hands, the double neck curve of a swan pair."

After reading the first two books in the series I had, had, HAD to read the third (and possibly final?) book because the cliffhangers Sierra Cross writes are no joke! I couldn't live not knowing Granny Sage's fate!

Just as with book two, we immediately dive into the action, picking up right where we left off. LOVE! We don't dive directly into the character development, but there was definitely so much of it with Hazel learning to place trust in others and take risks for those she loves, Elliot figuring out how to work with Hazel as a team, and Hazel's dad discovering his magic and learning to stand up for himself.

But let's dive into the part we've been absolutely waiting for...Elliot and Hazel FINALLY get together!! The two and half book slow burn of their relationship has been driving me beyond crazy because all I've wanted is for the two of them to be together since book one. But Cross knows her characters best and gave them the perfect moment to finally express themselves properly.

Elliot standing up for Hazel and then their first kiss happening while she was invisible was everything I didn't know I needed. A+ moment in my book!

Of course there was so much more beyond just their relationship, though I was happy it felt like a major puzzle piece this time around. Journeying through the forest to find the Red Witches and figuring out what was happening to the disappearing familiars were both hugely important adventures for both Elliot and Hazel and the character development I mentioned before.

Hazel gives off major Nancy Drew energy throughout the whole series (which might be one of the reasons I enjoyed this series so much) so to finally have her step outside of herself and her morals to prove that she would do anything for the people she loves was really important. But in the end, even with her drive pushing her farther than ever before, she stays true to herself with everything happening exactly the way it needed to.

I really hope this isn't the end, but considering the last two had major cliffhangers and we kind of got a nice wrapped up final scene, I'm guessing this is probably the last we hear from Hazel as our fmc. But I'd absolutley be on board if Cross decided to continue on with a next generation Blue Moon Bay series or maybe a new mystery from Britt or Max's perspective. Here's hoping this isn't the last of Blue Moon Bay!

Overall, this series is so fun and great for readers who love supernatural murder mysteries. This book was by far my favorite of the three (and not just because we finally had our Hazel / Elliot moment...even though that is definitely a big part of it). Definitely recommend reading Fangs and Frenemies and Scones and Slayers because this book is so worth the journey!
