Here For The Cake

"I may be your fake boyfriend, but I am a real gentleman."

Cover image of Jennifer Millikin's book, "Here For The Cake" featuring a setting sun on a beach and illustrated depictions of main characters, Klein and Paisley, standing back-to-back looking at each other over their shoulders.

SOME SPOILER-FREE THOUGHTS: An employer once told me that I spoke to formally (after using the word juxtaposition and ending a text message with a period...) so this book was SUCH validation to me that it's not a bad thing to have a great vocab! In fact, if you're looking to expand yours, this book is way more interesting than a dictionary and probably has more fascinating words in it! Having two smart and word-loving main characters made the banter off the CHARTS! And as dramatic as some major plot points are, it still maintains an authenticity that never makes you feel like anything that happens is too farfetched. A completely perfect combination of characters, plot, and development!

"Catastrophic thinking, or storytelling? Depends on the reader, I guess."

As soon as we got to the "my sister is marrying my ex" realization I literally called my sister and was like, "we would never, right?!" And then continued to have an hour long discussion about how icky that feels and like, why would you want to date your sister's ex anyway? It gives off major, "I couldn't have her, so I'm settling for you" vibes and no girl deserves that! When Grandma Lausanne turned to Klein and said, "Paisley should've told her sister to go f*ck herself" I literally cheered (and texted the quote to my sister) because YES!

But thankfully, that plot line worked out exactly the way it should (because we all know there's no happily ever after for the creep who preys on the little sister and continuously makes her feel less than) and as far as plot lines go, there was so much going on that I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, needing to know what happened next.

Obviously, the main attraction to all of this was Paisley and Klein's relationship, knowing that both of them wanted more after their first meet make out, but due to a miscommunication followed by a series of unfortunate events, college was not their time. Stumbling into each other years later at the exact moment Paisley needed Klein's backup and Klein needed Paisley's social savvy was so meet cute coded. And overall, their story was one big second chance at everything: first meeting, first kiss, beginning their relationship. I loved it all! It felt so healing to see them get the opportunity to try again knowing they both were invested from the start.

And the fact that they rebuild their foundation on friendship before even getting to the island and starting the "fake dating" portion of things was so perfect! We didn't have to experienced the awkward fumbling that comes with people not knowing each other (minus one crab soup situation) because Klein was so in deep for Paisley that he remembered everything about her, even from eight years ago. And, as bitter as she was about the peer review situation, she knew that he was a good guy and she took the time to welcome him back into her life.

By the time they got to the island, they were one kiss away from completely falling for each other. And that's exactly what happened!

And WAS THAT FIRST KISS WORTH THE WAIT!!! Just one kiss in private and one possessive public showing and Paisley was all in, quickly altering their "fake dating" arrangement to a "real fun in the bedroom" agreement. And of course that stemmed into a beautiful relationship that everyone could see was never fake.

This is a rom com for the ages and the entire time I was reading it I could visibly picture it as a film! So let's hop to it Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, Hallmark, whoever!! But this story has such mass appeal that I will be shocked if it isn't turned into a movie within the next couple of years. And when it does, I'll be the first to rush to theaters for it!

Overall, this book is perfect for book lovers who enjoy caring deeply for characters, screaming for two people to kiss, giddily kicking their feet at all the sweetness, and holding their breath during all the spice. Could not recommend Here For The Cake by Jennifer Millikin more highly! Get it now! It's available on KU, so you literally have no excuse not to start reading it immediately!!

All My Love,

Jane-Anne
