"It hurts a whole lot less to be hated when you're not being yourself than it does not to be loved for who you are..."

If you hand me a book and say, "here, it's enemies to lovers" you know I'm going to love it. Period. End of story. So Mile High has def been on my tbr for a while because I knew I was going to love it and I was saving it for that moment when you just need to pick up a book you know you're going to love.

That moment came. And this book did not disappoint!

We meet Chicago hockey's resident bad boy, Evan Zanders, who has been putting on this image under the impression that it's the only reason the fans, and the team, want him. His reputation as a playboy, an instigator, and an entitled jerk are what the world wants to talk about. But we immediately know that it's all a façade, with his best friend confirming as much right off the bat.

In walks Stevie Shay, the new flight attendant on his team's private plane who doesn't take any of his shit, despite her having many insecurities behind closed doors. Growing up in the shadow of her NBA star twin brother, the spotlight doesn't interest her and Zanders' reputation doesn't entice her. She's not impressed and he's majorly intrigued by this.

His annoying behavior and her lack of fascination in him immediately gives us a classic enemies to lovers set up, which I loved! Cut to the chase, they hate each other... or at least they don't want to like each other despite the clear chemistry between the two!

As things go on and we learn about both character's pasts (his mom left him as a teen and her last relationship was toxic af) they start to see they have more in common than they thought. Which is a real problem because they def hooked up and neither of them wanted to catch feelings. But ultimately their relationship with each other helps them to have a better relationship with themselves, which felt so healing as someone who has dealt with similar traumas as Stevie.

The scenes with the two of them were all out spicy and the slow burn BURNED me, y'all! I was screaming, I wanted their on the road hookup to continue so badly. But I loved that when their one-night-stand turned into two, it was in recognition that they both wanted more, not that they both just wanted to hook up. Really made the slow burn worth it!

Overall, this was a solid read that kept me engaged and wanting more. The third act breakup was a little longer than I would have liked (felt like we were going in circles for a little bit), but the breakup itself worked with the need for the character's development and I'm not mad about it.

Fellow hockey romance besties, be sure to pick up Mile High by Liz Tomforde (available on KU!) for your next enemies to lovers, slow burn, forbidden love binge! And I'm obviously adding Ryan and Indy's fake dating / roommates to lovers book—The Right Move— to my tbr and I'm excited to start it very, very soon!!

All My Love,

Jane-Anne
