Off Camera

"I don't know when common decency—like holding the door open and not making sexist jokes—became the bare f*cking minimum, but gosh I hate it here."

The cover of Chelsea Curto's book, "Off Camera" featuring two smart phones surrounded by yellow and orange sunflowers.

SOME SPOILER-FREE THOUGHTS: Oh gosh, how I loved this book! I can barely think in coherent sentences because my head is just a jumbled mess of "it's so good!" But Curto has done is again with an enemies to lovers to rivals and lovers story that will have you clutching your heart and kicking your feet all at the same time. Reid and Avery are intricate characters with ever unfolding layers that just continue to make you love them more. I honestly wish I could read this one again for the first time and am jealous of all of you that get to! Please DM me so we can chat about it!!

"If I had to put together my perfect person, every part of them would be made of you."

This book was exactly what I needed and I genuinely don't even know how any review I give it will do it justice. As with the last novel I reviewed by Curto, I am struggling to coherently put together the words to express my love for this book. So let's just hit the highlight knowing that regardless of anything I write you MUST MUST MUST read this book!

💫 Meet Cute

Fate worked overtime for Avery and Reid to be together. Despite the fact that they were in an anonymous work feud for years, they managed to sit next to each other at a bar and immediately hit it off only to part ways because of their jobs without securing each other's numbers. THEN they happen to be at the same wedding? Coincidence? I think not! Fate! They are so meant to be it's not even funny.

💫 Fast Burn

I love the tension of a good slow burn, but the burn we got from Reid and Avery was hard and fast and I was here for every second of it. They were on fire from the very beginning, which was beautifully juxtaposed with the softness of their personalities. They asked for what they wanted and they spoke their minds, but they were always kinds and perceptive of each other. It was spicy and sweet and completely satisfying.

💫 Banter

Whether IRl, via text, or DM, every conversation between our two leads felt like nothing I'd ever experienced in a rom com before. Their easy chat felt so natural and perfect for them, but so new to the genre. Their voices were so uniquely theirs and I couldn't help but fall in love with the way they speak. I have never wanted to adopt someone's personality more.

💫 Social Media Management Representation

As a social media manager by trade, I am always wary of how social media managers are represented in books, tv, and movies. It might not seem like that big a deal, but it's a hard job and so often we are written off as the Gen Z intern making TikToks without a care in the world. Curto did a phenomenal job of showcasing the work that actually goes into holding the job—specifically the lack of a social life / free time that accompanies it—and my heart burst open a little when Reid told corporate off for not respecting Avery as a professional in her field. Thanks for shining a light on those of us doing the work off camera! (see what I did there?)

💫 Previous Book Characters

I always love authors who interconnect their works and create these broad universes for us, but more often than not we get a little scene here and there with a cameo from a past beloved character. Maverick Miller would never stand to be in the background, though, and Curto made sure he was right there with Reid as his wing man for so much. Dallas, Maven, and Emmy all got their fun moments as well, but I will never get tired of my Mav moments in a Curto novel!

💫 No Third Act Breakup

I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't sure about this one. Towards the end I was holding my breath a little bit, nervous that a shoe was gonna drop. When work is twisted into love things can get messy, especially when that work is something as public as branded media followed by millions of extremely vocal fans. But like I said before, fate wasn't playing any games when it came to Reid and Avery and we didn't have to suffer once they realized they were meant to be together. Bless!

Just go get Off Camera by Chelsea Curto. That's the tweet. Period. You'll love it!

DM me after you read it. I'm not ready to stop gushing about it!
